Large Multi-National Technology Company Achieves Goal of ISO 9001 Certification, TL 9000 Certification and SEI CMM-SW Level 5 Assessment
This client was the wireless data infrastructure division of a large multi-national technology company. The division was responsible for designing and developing digital switch components for GPRS and UMTS (3G) GSM cellular networks.
The Challenge
Their goal was to become certified for ISO 9001, TL 9000 and to achieve a SEI CMM-SW Level 5 assessment. This goal was in addition to undertaking development of their newest major product. Prior to this project the client was assessed at SEI CMM-SW Level 1 and had no ISO or TL certifications. The client didn’t have a formalized requirements management process so another unrelated area of the company had been tasked with developing this using a well known requirements management tool.
The Solution
The client had established a small process improvement team to formalize their development process, make improvements and educate the development teams about the process.
Lyle Parkyn of ProSoft Solutions Inc. was contracted by the client since the R&D stages to provide software analysis, design and specification for parts of their newest product. During the course of that contract he had established the standards for their specification documents (feature requirements, software requirements and interface design). Since he was actively involved in the major aspects of development the client asked him to assist with the definition and improvement of their development process in preparation for certifications and assessments.
A critical aspect to achieving these certifications and assessments is requirements management. When Lyle realized the group’s requirements management solution would not meet their goals, he proposed an alternative solution. Upon the client’s agreement, he implemented this solution for them designing the necessary process, procedures and assets. Additionally, Lyle developed the roll-out and training materials and provided the training.
The Results
Through the hard work and efforts of the clients employees along with insight and contributions from Lyle the client achieved their certification for ISO 9001, TL 9000 and SEI CMM-SW Level 5 assessment.
